Spectrum Panel Discusses the Consequences of Interference for the Weather Enterprise

On October 1, 2019, Secure World Foundation hosted a luncheon panel discussion at the 2019 Joint Satellite Conference in Boston, Massachusetts. This first joint conference combined previous satellite-focused events from the American Meteorological Society (AMS), the European Organisation for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellites (EUMETSAT), and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). Over 600 participants attended the week-long conference discussing the latest observations, methods, modeling, and science enabled by the various international environmental observation satellites orbiting Earth today.

To take advantage of this highly technical and internationally diverse audience, SWF organized a luncheon panel with Narayan Strategy to probe the consequences of probable reallocation of spectrum later this year. Proposals to reallocate bands of spectrum for 5G telecommunications may cause interference with current allocations for meteorological observations. Panelists discussed the technical and political backgrounds of this issue, as well as possible solutions, and opportunities for the audience to get involved.
