SWF Technical Advisor Brian Weeden participated in the 4th International Space Debris Mitigation and Remediation Workshop, hosted by the French Space Agency (CNES) in Paris, France, from June 6-8, 2016. The workshop series has been held every two years since 2010 as a way to bring together space debris experts from around the world to exchange the latest research on space debris, and collaborate on future studies and projects. The 2016 workshop included participation by more than 100 individuals from Europe, the United States, Japan, Russia, China, and Singapore. Major topics addressed at the workshop including modeling of the space debris population, assessing the potential risks posed by large satellite constellations and cubesats, compliance with space debris mitigation guidelines, active debris removal (ADR) technologies and mission concepts, and potential technology demonstrations. Mr. Weeden served as a member of the organizing committee for the workshop, and co-chaired a session on detecting space debris and operational collision avoidance.
