Insight - SWF and The Space Symposium

Here in Colorado, April brings the scent of spring, a few more snowy days, and the Space Foundation’s annual Space Symposium.  A rare gathering of all constituencies in the space sector - civil, commercial, and military, the Symposium has proven fertile ground for the kind of engaged conversations we have found so useful in building support for space sustainability.

We believe that working for a commitment to the long-term sustainability of space activities makes the world more secure, makes the deployment and use of weapons in space less likely and increases the size of the global constituency supporting and seeking to protect the peaceful use of Earth orbit to meet human needs.

Laura Delgado López Delivers Lecture for UCT Space and Society Course

Ms. Delgado López delivered a virtual presentation to students of the University of Cape Town's Master of Space Studies program. As part of a discussion on regional space cooperation, she also gave a presentation entitled “Regional Space Cooperation: Spotlight on Latin America,” which can be downloaded here.

SWF Actively Participates in Spring Meetings of the International Astronautical Federation

Executive Director Michael Simpson, with Project Managers Christopher Johnson and Ian Christensen were in Paris, France to attend this annual conference, where they played key roles in committee leadership. The conference, held in partnership with the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA) andInternational Institute of Space Law (IISL), is an annual event to facilitate "dialogue between scientists around the world and support international cooperation in all space-related activities".

Laura Delgado López Presents at the 5th Annual Meeting of the CEOS WGCapD

Ms. Delgado López participated in the 5th Annual Meeting of the Working Group on Capacity Building and Data Democracy (WGCapD) of the Committee on Earth Observation Satellites (CEOS). She gave a presentation entitled “Considerations for Leveraging Capacity-Building Activities” at the Capacity-Building Summit held during the meeting. WGCapD-5 was hosted by the CEOS Systems Engineering Office at the NASA Langley Research Center.

SWF-sponsored ISU White Paper Space Solutions for Food and Water Security Now Available

At the 2016 International Space University (ISU) Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program 2016 (SHSSP16) held at the Mawson Lakes campus of the University of South Australia in Adelaide, SWF was pleased to  support this important publication detailing the importance of serving nations and individuals in need with access to essential biological and physiological needs. Working with an international coalition, SWF helped to highlight space-based solutions as they apply to the Global South. The summary of the paper is available here, and the full report here.
