Small Satellites: Benefits and Risks

Small satellites have become increasingly visible and important in global space activity. The relatively low cost of these systems lowers barriers to entry – allowing a growing number of nations, private organizations, university groups, and others to develop, launch, and operate satellites. Meanwhile, the capabilities of small satellites are steadily increasing, providing a wide range of potentially meaningful contributions to global space activity. This panel will examine the benefits of small satellites in terms of their practical applications, as well as their use for capacity building. Secure World Foundation is sponsoring this morning panel, to be moderated by Peter Platzer, CEO of Nanosatisfi (now Spire), at the Space Generation Advisory Council’s Annual Fusion Forum at the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs, Colorado. The Fusion Forum will be held immediately before the Space Foundation's 30th Space Symposium.
