Ian Christensen Gives Guest Lecture to Colorado School of Mines Class on Space Resources Fundamentals
Director of Private Sector Programs Ian Christensen gave an invited lecture on "Space Resources: Policy & Law Overview" to the Spring 2018 course on Space Resources Fundamentals at the Colorado School of Mines. This class is the initial offering in the School's graduate program on space resources, which aims to provide instruction related to "the responsible exploration, extraction, and use of resources in the Solar System."

SWF Provides Expertise for the 2018 ISU Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program
Executive Director Michael Simpson and Space Law Advisor Chris Johnson served as experts at the 2018 International Space University (ISU) Southern Hemisphere Space Studies Program (SHSSP) in Mawson Lakes, Adelaide, Australia.
This year’s SHSSP featured two Team Projects - one on new space agencies and another on disaster management and the role of space assets and space capabilities in mitigating and addressing natural disasters. SWF's Ray Williamson Future Fund Awardee, Isidora Casas Del Valle, participated in the team focused on disaster management. Their mission statement was to “identify and enhance the use of current and emerging space-based PNT technologies and services in developing nations’ disaster management systems.”

International Space Exploration Forum Seeks Strategies for International Cooperation for the Moon Base and Space Natural Resources
Recognizing a need for comprehensive studies over the construction of lunar bases and the exploitation of space natural resources, the University of Tokyo organized the “Strategies for the Moon Base & Space Natural Resources” workshop, on the occasion of the second International Space Exploration Forum, held in Tokyo, Japan. Mr. Johnson served as a panelist on the Strategies for International Cooperation panel. The workshop was held in an open forum for opinion leaders from industries, academia and students to discuss various strategies including law and policy in the context of the Moon exploration.

WorldDenver Celebrates Women in Space
Founder and President Cynda Collins Arsenault led a panel discussion on International Women's Day, hosted by WorldDenver, on the important role of women in aerospace. The panel included Washington Office Director Victoria Samson, offering her perspective on policy and security work, while others shared views from engineering, social sciences, launch, and human services. Ms. Collins Arsenault was honored with an award for her work with SWF and Dr. Mae Jemison gave an inspiring keynote address.

Policies and Standards to Enable Satellite Servicing Discussed at the Satellite 2018 Conference
Washington Office Director Victoria Samson and Director of Program Planning Brian Weeden participated in two events related to satellite servicing during the 2018 Satellite Conference, held in Washington, DC. On Monday, Dr. Weeden gave a flash talk at SGx, organized by the Space Generation Advisory Council and the Future Space Leaders Foundation, on how industry-led standards could help enable commercial satellite servicing that addresses major space sustainability challenges. On Wednesday, Dr. Weeden moderated a panel on "Finding a Pathway to Satellite Servicing" that discussed policy and regulatory steps the U.S. government can take to enable commercial satellite servicing. On Thursday, Ms. Samson spoke on a panel on "International Cooperation for Space Situational Awareness."

The Future of Satellite Communications and Implications for Militaries and Space Sustainability
Director of Program Planning Brian Weeden participated in a panel discussion hosted by Defense One on the future of military satellite communications. Dr. Weeden was joined by Colonel George Nagy, Chief of Space Support to the Operations Division; Ms. Deanne Ryals, Chief of International Programs Division within the MILSATCOM Systems Directorate, Space and Missile Systems Center, Air Force Space Command; and Mr. Doug Loverro, President, Loverro Consulting, LLC, and former Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Space Policy. The discussion focused on the potential future capabilities of commercial satellite communications and the implications for militaries and space sustainability. Student Generation Advisory Council Holds Event at European Space Agency Highlighting Success of Alumni
The Student Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) held a discussion and networking event for both past and present members for at the headquarters of the European Space Agency in Paris, France. Titled "SGAC: Through the Generations," the event was an opportunity for present members to meet and be inspired by successful alumni experiences. Director of Space Applications Programs Krystal Wilson spoke on the panel "Space Applications for Society" relating her experiences and insights on how space can better serve life on Earth.

SWF Participates in Spring Meetings of the 2018 International Astronautical Federation
Dr. Simpson, Mr. Christensen, and Ms. Wilson represented SWF on several committees and working groups during the spring meetings of the International Astronautical Federation (IAF) in Paris, France. SWF staff assisted with conference planning and participated in the review and selection of papers to be presented at the 2018 International Astronautical Congress to be held in Bremen, Germany in September 2018. While at the IAF meetings, SWF staff actively engaged with the Earth Observation Committee, the GEOSS sub-committee, Commercial Spaceflight Safety Committee, and the Entrepreneurship and Investment Committee as well as attended meetings of the IAA study group on “Post-Mission Disposal for Micro and Smaller Satellites" and the Working Group on Emerging Countries.

SWF Supports Space Seminar at Vatican Observatory
Dr. Simpson and his wife, the Reverend Carol Simpson were among the thirty invited delegates at a seminar on linking the capabilities of space applications to the achievement of the sustainable development goals. Gathering at the Specola Vaticana (Vatican Observatory) in Albano Laziale outside Rome, the delegates spent a long day exploring ways in which space technology could contribute to making progress on the SDG's. Discussions covered a wide range of topics including climate change, disaster management, peace, and diplomacy with Dr. Simpson moderating a panel on humanitarian aid.

Panel Discusses the Role of Standards and Best Practices in an Increasing Complex Orbital Environment
Mr. Christensen moderated a panel on "International Standardization to Avoid Catastrophe-Orbital Paths, Debris Mitigation, Decommissioning, and Deorbiting" at the Space 2.0 conference in San Jose, CA. Discussion focused on how the increasing complexity, range of actors, and investment in utilizing the space environment is driving a push for the development of shared responsible operations principles - and how standards and best practices support and enable that increased utilization.
