Brussels Space Policy Round Table: International Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities - the International Perspective

When: Thursday, March 8, 2012

Where: Avenue des Arts 8, 1210 Brussels (building of the French Chamber of Commerce and Industry)

The long-term sustainability of the outer space faces various risks. Ensuring that the space environment is safe and stable should be of high importance to the global community. The draft Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities was published by the EU in 2008 with a revised draft released in September 2010. Among its concerns, the draft takes "into account that space debris constitutes a threat to outer space activities and potentially limits the effective deployment and exploitation of associated space capabilities" and strives for "the formation of a set of best practices aimed at ensuring security in outer space could become a useful complement to international space law".

The Secure World Foundation will organize a panel discussion titled: International Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities - the International Perspective, as the part of the SWF's Brussels Space Policy Round Table series of short panel discussions focused on significant global space events with a particular emphasis on Europe. The schedule of these events is driven by the important occurrences in the space sector. This event will focus on the EU proposed International Code of Conduct for Outer Space Activities. It will examine its current status, challenges, and the way forward from the point of view of several States.
